4th and 1 Football Camp at NTCC

I wanted to share with you an event Northeast Texas Community College is hosting this summer. It’s a football camp, the first of its kind in this area, for current high school sophomore athletes designed to provide much more than just football skills training. 4th and 1, created by a current NFL coach and former Mount Pleasant High School graduate, will also focus on academic and professional development such as test-taking strategies for the SAT/ACT as well as how to create a resume and show proper etiquette in a variety of settings.

4th and 1 is looking for underrepresented athletes with a minimum B average in core high school curriculum. If you personally know of a student who meets the requirements for this camp, please direct the student to the camp’s website at www.4thand1.org. There, they will find detailed information about the camp as well as the online application which is due electronically by May 15. There is no cost to campers selected for this week-long summer program set for July 12-16, 2010.

ACE Celebrates Read Across America Day! By Guest Blogger, Casey Morgan

March 2 is National Read Across America day. It is also the birthday of the famous author, Dr. Seuss. In honor of both of these events, our ACE After-School program celebrated this day!

ACE students started off our afternoon with a delightful green eggs and ham snack provided by our cafeteria. After our snack, we were fortunate to have a few guest readers from Mrs. Calcote's Ready, Set, Teach class. Students were able to attend three different stations: “If I Ran The Zoo”, where students created their very own Dr. Seuss zoo animal; “ Seuss Celebrations,” where students participated in fun Seuss activities, and “Seussville University,” where students were able to play on the Seussville learning website.

We also had a very special guest among us, the Cat in the Hat!

National Read Across America day is a great way to help show the importance of reading. Reading sets a foundation for our students and Dr. Seuss helped create a world of reading that captivated many. Our ACE After-School program had a blast celebrating this day! We hope to keep the Seuss Celebrations an ACE tradition.

Student Spotlight: Camden Skinner

This week's student spotlight is Camden Skinner, a 3rd grader at Hughes Springs Elementary School. Camden's parents are Todd and Christal Skinner.

Camden is active in the Boy Scout and his church, First Baptist Church of Hughes Springs.

Camden says his favorite subject is science. He says he loves science because he gets to learn about animals, their systems and where they live.

Camden's favorite teacher is Ms. Beth Lollar. He says that Ms. Lollar has taught him a lot!

Camden says the best thing about being a student at Hughes Springs ISD is the great teachers they have to teach him.

When he grows up, Camden wants to go to college and be a Drug Task Force Officer so he can protect kids from drugs.

Camden was nominated by his teacher who says, "Camden is a remarkable student in every way. He always takes his time completing assignments and does his best. Camden is helpful to peers and always exhibits respect and great manners."

Congratulations Camden! We are so proud to have you as a student at Hughes Springs ISD!!!
