5th Grade Holds Election by Guest Blogger, Kristi Harrel

The 5th grade students spent a few weeks learning about the election process for President and Vice-President. Although they were too young to actually run for office, they held their own election for Principal and Assistant Principal instead.

They began the race by making campaign posters listing why they were the best candidate for the position. They registered to vote and held a primary election to narrow down the candidates. The primary winners then each filmed a commercial in which they listed ways they would make Hughes Springs Elementary more fun for the students. Each class watched the commercials and then voted for the candidate they felt would do the best job. The votes were counted and the results were announced: Carson Moreland, Principal and Haley Davidson, Assistant Principal.

The two winners took office on December 16 as Principal Moreland and Assistant Principal Davidson. They had a busy day implementing new rules for 5th grade and handling discipline problems. However, they did manage to find some time to have fun! Principal Moreland and Assistant Principal Davidson did a great job while in office and the students really enjoyed some of their new rules, one of them being extra recess! The students had so much fun learning about and participating in the election process.

Who knows, our future President and Vice-President might be a 5th grader at HSISD!
